This website tells alot about the Legend of Fa Mulan and it tells alot about the Disney version. The biggest difference between the Legend and Disney's version is that in the legend she doesn't get caught. She gets an offer to be part of the emperor's council while everyone still believes she is a man. When she gets home, she turns back into a lady. This completley shocks her fellow soldiers. In the movie she gets caught, but her life is spared. Also, in the legend she has a younger brother, but he is too young to serve. Maybe thats where Disney got the idea to give her a dog name "little brother"...
