RENT

First off, I absolutely loved RENT. It was the bomb! I loved the realness of it. It wasn't just a lame play someone wrote because they were bored. It had beautiful music and an amazing cast. I think its considered a pivitol show because of all the maturity one must posses to actually watch it and understand it. Also, it is very "out of the box", most people won't write about such fragile subjects as AIDS, homelessness, drugs, and homo sexuality and being able to put a positive message in it all, that is truly a gift. I really enjoy shows that are "out of the box" because they aren't just like the same thing over and over again, they bring up real problems and are quite fun to watch.

  1. Erin,
You nailed it with the realness. That is exactly what Larson was trying to do. He recognized that people loved music but didn't love musicals - because they weren't real to them anymore. He wanted something that would bring broadway musicals back to the forefront of musical theatre...no more dancing girls in sequins. He did it and a decade later we still love it.
